History
Fue el papa n.º 256 de la Iglesia católica. Su pontificado, de veinticinco años de duración, se desarrolló entre los años 1878 y 1903.
Fue el sexto de los siete hijos del conde Ludovico Pecci y su esposa Anna Prosperi Buzzi. Sus hermanos fueron Giuseppe y Giovanni Battista Pecci. Su familia pertenecía a la pequeña nobleza rural. Su padre era comisario de guerra y coronel. Ya en su juventud se señaló como un gran latinista, y en su madurez sería un conocido humanista, diestro escritor de poemas y cartas en latín. Fue alumno del colegio jesuita de Viterbo y, entre 1824 y 1832, estudió Teología en el Collegium Romanum
