History
Hijo de Juan van der Hamen, flamenco noble nacido en Bruselas y llegado a España antes de 1586 como miembro de la Guardia de los Archeros Reales, y de Dorotea Whitman Gómez de León, hija de un arquero real flamenco y de una hidalga nacida en Toledo. Fue el hermano del pintor del barroco español Juan van der Hamen.
Recibió una educación desarrollada en ambientes cultos de la Corte, donde residía. Posteriormente cursó estudios, en la Universidad de Alcalá.
Fue ordenado sacerdote el 21 de julio de 1625, desempeñando varios cargos en la Congregación de san Pedro. Falleció en Granada el 16 de noviembre de 1664.
