Nació en Ginebra y muere en Aviñón. Antipapa (1378-1394).
Roberto era el hijo de Amadeo III, conde de Ginebra, y nació en la ciudad Ginebra en 1342 y de la noble Mahaut di Auvernia, hija de Roberto VII conde de Auvernia. Estudió en la Sorbona en París, fue canciller en Amiens y, canónico de la catedral de Notre Dame.
Fue elegido papa por los cardenales franceses frente a Urbano VI, con lo que se inició el Cisma de Occidente (1378-1417). Le reconocieron como papa, Francia y sus aliados.
