Miembro del cuerpo de Archiveros, Bibliotecarios y Arqueólogos y trabajó como jefe del Departamento de Manuscritos en la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid.
Fue también bibliotecario en las casas ducales de Alba y Medinaceli.
Se jubiló en 1911, después de haber sido Secretario General del Cuerpo Facultativo de Archiveros, Bibliotecarios y Arqueólogos y segundo jefe de la Biblioteca Nacional (1887-1892).
