En los años como guardia de Carlos V se forma en arquitectura, pero también en geometría, matemáticas, astronomía e incluso alquimia, materias que le servirían para diseñar ingenios y herramientas aplicadas a la construcción. Su influencia será tal que el estilo ‘herreriano’ acabará definiendo la arquitectura de los Austrias, cuya influencia se extenderá por todo el Imperio Español.
