History
Tiene su sede en el Palacio de la Cancillería de Roma. Se encarga de los asuntos concernientes a la administración de indulgencias.
Fue remodelada por Pío V en 1569, Benedicto XIV en 1744 y Pío X.
Hoy en día la Penitenciaría está dirigida por un cardenal prefecto, el Penitenciario mayor, asistido por un regente, dos oficiales y un consejo de prelados. Los documentos que regulan el funcionamiento de la Curia Romana son la constitución apostólica de S. Juan Pablo II Pastor Bonus (1988) y el Reglamento General de la Curia Romana (4 de febrero de 1992).
